Final Project

I’ve decided to partner with Rachel to work on our final project.  She had a very interesting idea to explore the greek world.  Although I have no greek life experience I have always pondered the initiation process and since she has experienced it I think would make a good match in our research process.  We have decided to go back and research the history and origin of fraternities and sororities and where it all began.  We are also going to attempt to find out how hazing was brough into the recruitment process.  There are many things in sororities that people don’t understand the reasoning behind and we want to explore the reasonings for the abnormal rituals performed, especially on the incoming “pledge class”.

    Hi Halie,
I feel its so important to research about other cultures outside of your own. Because of cultural difference you will probably find out some interesting information. I am wondering how will you go about finding out information about the different sororities? Are you planning on interviewing anyone? Hazing has been done on the down low so I am also wondering if you have someone in mind that can give you information regarding the hazing that took place. I think its great to also find out what is still going on today…I am guessing they are still around?

Interesting topic! In terms of the visual aspect of your study, I would say you could focus on finding historical pictures on the GReek world, esp. relating to the topics you are interested in (hazing etc). Also, you could do photo elicitation using these pictures wih people from the Greek community.
